Charger Players Lead First Captains’ Practice of the Summer
While a lot of other GLIAC football players were relaxing by a lake or occupying themselves with other summer pursuits, a significant number of Hillsdale College Chargers were on the turf of Muddy Waters Stadium Saturday morning and afternoon.
The first of two scheduled “Captains’ Practices” took place as various players led classroom meetings, a conditioning session, and then a walk-through practice.
Players spent time together off of the field too with some of the older guys inviting younger guys to spend Friday night with them.
It was also the first opportunity for incoming recruits to join veteran players in football related activities besides watching April’s Spring Game.
One recruit, quarterback Steven Ficyk shared his excitement for the whole weekend via social media.
Hillsdale has also had a few late additions via transfer. One of them, Chance Stewart, a QB from Western Michigan had his first chance to throw and spend time with his new teammates. At 6-5 and 240 pounds, the redshirt freshman is eligible to play this year but faces a very deep field of quarterback hopefuls including Jr. Mark Laprairie who started most games last season as well as Sr. CJ Mifsud who got a pair of wins last year in two starts start versus Saginaw Valley and Northwood.
The Chargers will gather again on July 25 for their 2nd Captains’ Practice. The team reports to camp on August 12th in preparation for their September 5th season opener with Findlay at Muddy Waters Stadium.
