So much for riding the momentum of last week’s great comeback win over Michigan Tech. Hillsdale falls to 2-1 on the season with a sloppy performance against McKendree University (2-1) at Muddy Waters Stadium. Final score: McKendree 24 Hillsdale 21
Turnovers, an uncharacteristic number of penalties, and a simple lack of execution saw the Chargers in their own way all night long. The most telling stat of the night is Hillsdale’s 18% 3rd down conversion rate. The Chargers converted only 2 of 11 3rd down chances on offense.
The Charger defense played well most of the night even coming up with 4th quarter interception by Merrick Canada to give his the ball and a spark but McKendree would keep Hillsdale from scoring again.
The Hillsdale offense did post over 200 yards rushing on great efforts from Christian Shepler, David Graham, and Casey O’Brien. The trio combined for 164 yards and 2 touchdowns. Graham had a beautiful 39 yard carry on a 4th and 1 try that put Hillsdale up 21-17 with just under eight minutes left in the 3rd quarter.
Chance Stewart was 12 of 20 for 104 yards and a touchdown to Austin Sandusky. Sandusky was Hillsdale’s top receiver with 4 catches for 34 yards.
