Hillsdale looks to pick up where it left off last season, with an opening week win against Indy.

Hillsdale College won its last four games to close out the 2015 season but has not won its opening football game since 2010.

A win tonight against Indianapolis, a team that went to the playoffs and spanked the Chargers 38-7 a year ago, would keep the momentum rolling and infuse the program with the confidence it can play with and beat anybody. It would stop the trend of starting slowly. Nothing infuses confidence like a win.

Even though Hillsdale hasn’t won an opener in 5 years, the Chargers have been highly competitive…losing by an average of 6.4 points. Only once has Hillsdale failed to win its next game. With all of that said a loss tonight doesn’t wreck their┬áseason, but a win could go a long way to launching something special as Hillsdale makes its last run through the GLIAC before joining the GMAC conference in 2017.

It has been a longtime since Hillsdale has returned this many starters (7 on offense, 9 on defense) and key components. Quarterback Chance Stewart, GLIAC Freshman of the Year RB Joe Reverman, and WR Trey Brock all led the team as freshmen in their respective statistical categories and also emerged as team leaders. How well these three continue to develop as well as having a number of other players step up at other spots will continue to make Hillsdale a legitimate contender this year.

Indianapolis also returns a lot of its key components. Sophomore Quarterback Jake Purichia made his collegiate debut against Hillsdale last year but spent the year as the back-up. Tonight marks his first game as a starter and you can bet Hillsdale will be looking for guys up front like Drew Mallery and Jordan Hallamert to disrupt Purichia as much as possible. Wide receiver Reece Horn put up 153 yards on Hillsdale last year and running back Andrew Walker had 111 yards on just 11 carries. Both return this year as well.

These teams have met 29 times with Hillsdale holding a slim 15-14 series advantage. Kickoff is 7:00 PM in Hillsdale and should be an excellent contest.
