Hillsdale College Release: A new era in Hillsdale College athletics began Saturday, as the Chargers joined the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.
Hillsdale was joined in the move, now official, by former GLIAC institutions University of Findlay, Lake Erie College, Ohio Dominican University and Walsh University. Malone University, also formerly of the GLIAC, made its move over to the GMAC on July 1, 2016.
These schools join existing GMAC institutions Alderson Broaddus University, Cedarville University, Davis & Elkins College, Kentucky Wesleyan College, Ohio Valley University, Trevecca Nazarene University and Ursuline College.
The announcement of the move came on June 29, 2015, with each of the five GLIAC schools needing to wait a conference-mandated two years before the move became official. Hillsdale College had been a member of the GLIAC since 1974, when it became the fourth football-playing institution to join the league.
From 1960-74 Hillsdale was an independent athletic school after many years as a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The Chargers were a member of the NAIA throughout its history until it moved to the NCAA Division II in 1990.
