Homecoming Blowout of KWC Leads to GMAC Showdown with Ohio Dominican

Hillsdale College (3-2, 1-0 GMAC) has its offense clicking! Two weeks ago against #14 Indianapolis, Hillsdale dug itself out of a 23 point first half hole by reeling off 38 points and outgaining Indy by 384 yards over the course of the final 3 quarters, only to lose the game 45-38 on a tipped pass returned for 6 points. Despite the loss both Chance Stewart and Trey Brock set Hillsdale records for passing (458) and receiving (302) yards respectively. The Chargers continued to shatter their own records and the young GMAC record books in its 3rd win of the season this past Saturday.

Hillsdale scored 7 touchdowns on its first 7 possessions on Saturday in a 56-0 win over Kentucky Wesleyan. The Chargers’ first win in GMAC play saw the team set a new single-game record for team offense (659 yards).   Getting win #4 overall and GMAC win #2 will be much harder as Hillsdale travels to Ohio Dominican (2-3, 2-0 GMAC) this weekend. Kickoff is noon from Columbus.

Ohio Dominican had a rough schedule to open the season with games at #16 Cal PA (36-34 loss), at #8 Ashland (47-21 loss), and at Ivy League and D1 Penn (42-24 loss). Since then ODU has been on a tear through its first two GMAC games. The Panthers beat Lake Erie 51-0 in its only home game of the year and beat Walsh in Canton 20-3 last week. Over that two game stretch, ODU has gained over 1000 yards, 640 vs. Lake Erie, and 388 at Walsh. The Panthers, picked by league coaches to win the GMAC this year, are definitely one of the toughest 2-3 teams in the country.

Add in Hillsdale’s recent offensive fireworks and over the course of the last two weeks,  these two schools have combined for 165 points and 2337 yards of total offense. Saturday has all of the markings of a shootout and features elite level Division II talent.

If we look back to last year’s GLIAC statistics you find Stewart and Brock in the top 5 performers with ODU’s QB Grant Russell and WR Cory Contini.

QB – YPG
(4) Chance Stewart – HC 254.6
(5) Grant Russell – ODU 248.2

WR – YPG
(1) Trey Brock – HC 132.2
(4) Cory Contini – ODU 89.5

Russell has already eclipsed 1500 yards and has thrown 13 TD to just 1 interception. Stewart has thrown for 1283 yards, 8 TD, and 4 interceptions. Contini has 40 receptions for 504 yards. Brock has caught 36 for 592 yards.

The winner of this game will have a leg up on the chase for the GMAC title. The 4-1 Findlay Oilers, who Hillsdale plays next week, will have something to say about that as well.

Stay tuned for all of your links and previews for following the action on Saturday.
