Warren was born March 4, 1932, in Alpena, MI, son of the late Warren C. and Ann (Graham) Spragg Sr. At the age of two, his mother died and his father married Alma Black, who raised him as her own along with his four brothers.
A 1950 graduate of Alpena High School he enrolled at Michigan State as a freshman where he played football for the National Championship Team in 1952. He transferred to Hillsdale where the team compiled a winning streak of 25 straight during his three years there. Warren’s grid honors began in high school where he was named to the All American team and further honors included two years as an All Conference selection and nomination to the little All American team in 1955. He was selected in the 10th round by the Los Angeles Rams of the National Football League and played from 1957-1958.
